On November 24, 2012, 16-year-old Gregory James Kuljian was with his family and girlfriend at Big Lagoon County Park in Humboldt County, California, when a tragic series of events led to his disappearance. The family's dog, Fran, was pulled into the ocean by a rogue wave while chasing a stick. Gregory entered the water to rescue the dog, and his father, Howard Kuljian, followed him in.
