In the summer of 1980, 26-year-old Sanders Maurice Seligman of Vancouver, British Columbia, embarked on a vacation that took him to the Virgin Islands and the Bahamas before he arrived in Florida. While in Florida, he stayed at the Singapore Motel in Bal Harbour. On August 15, 1980, Seligman spoke with his mother by phone from Miami, telling her he would be returning home in two days. He mentioned that he had purchased Colombian emeralds worth $1,500 as a gift for her.
