Edward Ryan Makua Hanai Aikau was a renowned Hawaiian lifeguard and big-wave surfer who vanished on March 17, 1978, after heroically attempting to seek help for his stranded crewmates. Born in Maui in 1946, Aikau became the first lifeguard on Oahu's North Shore in 1968.
