On June 9, 1997, her 59th birthday, Bongak Koja disappeared during her customary early morning walk in Oahu, Hawaii. She departed from her Mie Place residence at approximately 3:00 a.m. for her usual route, which took her past Leilehua High School. Koja, who was a caregiver for her husband who suffered from arthritis, never came back home, leaving behind her husband and four dogs.
