On August 22, 1981, 21-year-old Joseph Grasher attended a birthday party in the 1000 block of Poyntz Avenue in Manhattan, Kansas. He, along with another man, Stephen Hammerle, left the party in a red van with two other unidentified individuals. Reports from the time indicate that Grasher and Hammerle intended to go to the store. Neither Grasher nor Hammerle were ever seen or heard from again, and the red van has never been located.
