On August 14, 2008, Piotr Piela, a 29-year-old Polish sailor, vanished under mysterious circumstances while aboard the ship BBC Ecuador, which was anchored in the port of Galveston Bay, Texas. Piela, a graduate of the Maritime Institute of Technology in Szczecin, Poland, had requested permission to go ashore but was denied. Shortly after this refusal, he jumped overboard into the water. At the time, the vessel was approximately 70 yards from the shore.
