In the late summer evening of September 1, 2023, 52-year-old Sherell Renea Brown was sitting on the porch of her Petersburg, Virginia, home, located at the corner of Hanover and Patterson Streets. Earlier that evening, around 7:00 p.m., her mother had visited. Sherell, who was recovering from recent seizures and was still weak, asked her mother to take her somewhere, but her mother declined due to her health condition. Later, after 11:00 p.m., her husband came home and saw her on the porch with their 11-year-old granddaughter before he went inside for a few minutes. When he returned, Sherell was gone. Her granddaughter, the last person to see her, recounted that Sherell said she needed to get some help and would be back, then simply walked away from the residence. Sherell's departure was sudden and concerning, primarily because she left everything behind. She did not take her cellular phone or, most critically, her necessary medications. Sherell lives with diabetes and has a history of seizures dating back to 2011; she had experienced two seizures in the two weeks leading up to her disappearance. At the time she went missing, she was wearing a blue and white shirt, blue shorts, and light-colored shoes with orange accents, along with a black wig styled in a bob. Her husband initially searched for her in the immediate area but was not overly alarmed at first, as she had disappeared for short periods before. However, when she did not return the next morning as he had expected, concern grew. Sherell was officially reported missing to the Petersburg Police Department on September 4, 2023. In the months that have followed, Sherell's family and the Petersburg community have made desperate pleas for her return. They have organized searches, distributed flyers, and even hired a private investigator in their search for answers. Community groups and city leaders have come together to rally support and establish a reward fund for any information that could lead to her whereabouts. Her mother, Brenda Blackwell, has spoken of the family's exhaustive efforts, including checking bank accounts, which showed no activity, and confirming that she had not picked up her prescriptions. While authorities have stated they do not suspect foul play, her family fears she may have suffered a medical emergency that led to her disappearance. The case remains an active and unsolved missing person investigation, leaving a family to grapple with the uncertainty of what happened to a loved one who vanished after saying she was going to get help.
