On January 15, 2022, a 20-year-old man named Ahmed Hasheem Ebrahim, known to some as Kareem, left his family's home on Beauregard Street in Alexandria, Virginia, with the intention of visiting a friend. This was the last time his family would see him. Two days later, on January 17, with no word from Ahmed, his concerned family reported him missing. The investigation into his disappearance began immediately, and the following day, authorities located his vehicle, which had been towed from a location in Alexandria. Upon examining the car, detectives made a grim discovery: there was blood inside, signaling that this was no ordinary missing person case. The presence of blood prompted police to upgrade the case to that of a critical missing person, fearing for his safety. The investigation quickly gained momentum as detectives uncovered who had been driving Ahmed's car after his disappearance. On January 24, police arrested 20-year-old Joel Antonio Sarabia of Fairfax. Through interviews, investigators determined that Sarabia knew Ahmed and had conspired with a 17-year-old associate to rob him on January 16. Authorities believe that during the robbery, Sarabia shot Ahmed in the upper body while he was sitting in his car in a parking lot on Lachine Lane in Lincolnia. Following the shooting, the two suspects allegedly drove Ahmed's car with him inside before disposing of his body in a dumpster on January 17. Sarabia was charged with first-degree murder, robbery resulting in death, concealment of a dead body, and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The 17-year-old was also taken into custody and charged with robbery resulting in death and concealment of a dead body. In the wake of the arrests and confessions, a massive search effort was launched to find Ahmed's remains. Believing his body was in a landfill in King George County, law enforcement agencies undertook an enormous and costly operation. For nearly three weeks, teams sifted through thousands of tons of garbage, a search that cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. Despite these exhaustive efforts, Ahmed's body was not recovered, and the search was eventually called off. His family, grappling with their devastating loss, publicly pleaded with authorities to resume the search, believing that with more resources, he could be found and brought home for a proper burial. The case remains a tragedy of a young life taken by violence; although arrests have been made and the circumstances of his death are believed to be known, Ahmed Hasheem Ebrahim is still considered a missing person whose body has never been found.
