In the early summer of June 1973, a 32-year-old woman named Sallie Belle Maxi Signani disappeared from Renton, Washington. At the time, she was navigating a period of personal change, having recently separated from her husband and begun living with a new partner. Concern for Sallie's welfare grew when she uncharacteristically failed to arrive for her job. This absence was the first indication to those who knew her that something was amiss, triggering the initial report of her disappearance. She was described as a white female with blonde hair and brown eyes, standing at 5'1" and weighing around 125 pounds. She was known to sometimes use the last names Bigelow and Gard. The investigation into Sallie's disappearance was fraught with difficulties from the very beginning. In a significant setback to the case, the original police file containing all the initial findings and evidence mysteriously vanished sometime after she was reported missing. This loss of crucial information hampered the investigation for decades, leaving a void where answers should have been. It wasn't until thirty years later, in 2003, that authorities took the step of opening a new file on her case, essentially starting the investigation from scratch. This new file, however, could not replace the contemporaneous details and leads that were lost with the original documents. Decades have now passed since Sallie Belle Maxi Signani was last seen, and her case remains unsolved, leaving her family and community without answers. The lack of available information, compounded by the loss of the original investigative file, has made finding the truth about what happened to her an immense challenge for law enforcement. The King County Sheriff's Office continues to hold the case, numbered 04-029197, in the hopes that new information may one day come to light. The overview of this case is a story of a young woman who vanished during a transitional phase of her life, and an investigation hindered by the unfortunate loss of its foundational records, leaving a lingering sense of uncertainty.
