In the spring of 2022, a 61-year-old man named Gregory W. Shane seemingly vanished from the familiar wooded areas of Renton, Washington. For several years, Gregory had made his home among the trees in the Highlands area, living a transient lifestyle. His connection to the outside world was minimal, but he maintained contact with his brother. The last time his brother heard his voice was during a phone call in May of that year. After that call, an unsettling silence began, stretching from days into weeks and eventually, into a painful void of the unknown. Concern for his brother grew with each passing day of silence. Having not heard from him since their conversation in May, Gregory's brother took the step of officially reporting him as a missing person. The Renton Police Department was faced with a challenging situation, as Gregory's last documented contact with law enforcement had been years earlier, in 2017. His life off the grid meant there were few, if any, digital or social footprints to trace. All that was known of his appearance at the time was that he was a white male, standing about 5 feet 11 inches tall and weighing around 145 pounds. His hair was graying and long in the back, though he was bald on top, and his eyes were blue. He often wore his facial hair unshaven and sometimes grew a beard, which may have concealed a distinctive scar near the left side of his mouth. The circumstances surrounding Gregory Shane's disappearance remain shrouded in uncertainty. A brother's concern initiated a formal investigation, but the passage of time and Gregory's chosen way of life presented significant obstacles. He had been living a solitary existence in the woods, a life that, while chosen, also left him vulnerable and out of sight. The lack of contact after May 2022 is the central and most troubling aspect of his case. With no new information or sightings, the case is a quiet but deeply felt testament to a man who lived on the periphery of society and whose absence was first noted by the voice of a loving brother on the other end of a silent phone line.
