In the winter of 2009, a 31-year-old man named Carl Chénier vanished from his home in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighbourhood of Montreal, Quebec. The last confirmed sighting of Carl was on February 23, 2009. Just prior to his disappearance, he had been grappling with personal challenges, including a difficult breakup and what his family described as mental health struggles. He had sought help at a local hospital a short time before he went missing. The last known contact anyone had with him was a birthday message he left for his mother. At the time he was last seen, Carl was described as being 6'1" and weighing approximately 225 pounds, with curly brown hair and brown eyes. He was reportedly wearing a 3/4 length black coat, black boots, and a black toque. The days and weeks following Carl's disappearance turned into a prolonged and heart-wrenching search for his family. His mother, Nicole Laurence, was deeply affected by her son's absence and took an early retirement from her job as she found it impossible to continue her work, constantly scanning the faces of strangers in the hope of finding him. She tirelessly distributed his photo and spoke with people in the areas he was known to frequent, including homeless individuals, in case he had ended up on the streets. All of Carl's personal belongings were found untouched in his apartment, and there has been no activity on his bank account since the day he was last seen, adding to the mystery of his sudden departure. The investigation into Carl Chénier's disappearance has unfortunately yielded few answers over the years. In 2012, a glimmer of hope emerged when a former co-worker reported seeing someone they believed to be Carl on the Montreal subway, but this lead did not result in a breakthrough. The official investigation has since stalled, leaving his loved ones in a painful state of uncertainty. His mother has expressed her profound wish to simply know what became of her son, appealing to the public for any information that might bring closure. The case remains an open and unresolved missing person investigation, a poignant reminder of a son, friend, and community member who vanished without a trace.
