In the summer of 1972, a heart-wrenching event unfolded in Saint-Hubert, Québec, that would leave a family and a community searching for answers for decades to come. On the afternoon of June 4th, four-and-a-half-year-old Chantal De Montgaillard, a young girl with curly black hair, vanished without a trace. She had been with her father, Claude de Montgaillard, and her two-year-old brother, François, on their way to Montreal. Her father made a brief stop around 3:30 p.m. at a friend's house to repay a small debt, leaving Chantal and her brother in his truck for what he anticipated would be only a few minutes. The vehicle was parked in the lot of Paul-Chagnon school. When he returned to the vehicle a short time later, he found his son still inside, but Chantal was gone. Immediate and extensive searches were launched in the moments and days following Chantal's disappearance. Hundreds of police officers and volunteers scoured a 26-square-mile area surrounding the location where she was last seen. The search efforts were exhaustive, employing helicopters, tracking dogs, and amphibious vehicles to explore every possibility. Authorities and volunteers meticulously combed through yards, fields, and any place a small child might be found, but their efforts yielded no clues as to her whereabouts. Chantal was described as a trusting child who would talk to strangers, a detail that concerned her parents who had often reminded her not to. At the time of her disappearance, she was wearing grey and brown plaid pants and a white sweater. Years turned into decades, and Chantal's case grew cold, becoming one of Quebec's oldest unsolved disappearances. However, a potential breakthrough emerged in the 2010s when investigators revisited the case. A possible link was established to a man named Michel Derry, who had been involved in the 1983 murder of another young girl. During an interrogation in 1983, Derry had allegedly confessed to abducting a four-year-old girl in the Saint-Hubert area in 1972. He provided a detail about the color of the little girl's underwear that had never been made public, a detail that matched what Chantal was wearing. Derry claimed he had tied the child to a tree but denied killing her; however, no evidence was ever found to support his claim. Despite this lead, Chantal's body has never been found, and her case officially remains an unsolved disappearance. The Sûreté du Québec's Division of Disappearances and Unsolved Cases continues to keep the file active, holding out hope that one day, the mystery of what happened to Chantal De Montgaillard will finally be solved.
