In the early hours of June 6, 1996, 23-year-old Patricia Ferguson vanished from the Pointe-aux-Trembles neighborhood of Montreal, Quebec, leaving behind her infant daughter and a perplexing note. She had been staying the night at a friend's home with her 11-month-old child. When her friend awoke, Patricia was gone. A note was discovered, stating she had left for breakfast and was planning to meet her sister. Patricia was never seen or heard from again, and her disappearance marked the beginning of a mystery that would span decades, leaving her young daughter to grow up with the painful belief that she had been abandoned. For years, the case yielded few answers and little progress, fading from public view and becoming a cold case. For nearly three decades, Patricia's daughter, Sabrina, lived with the uncertainty of her mother's fate, grappling with stories and rumors about why she might have left. The silence in the case finally broke in the early 2020s when new information, partly brought to light by a true-crime documentary series, prompted investigators to take a fresh look at the circumstances of Patricia's disappearance. In December 2022, Montreal police set up a command post in the area where Patricia was last seen, hoping to gather new information from the public, while a local charity offered a financial reward for any tips that could help solve the case. This renewed effort brought a sense of hope that answers might finally be within reach for a family that had waited so long. The renewed investigation led to a major breakthrough. In June 2023, police arrested Serge Audette, who was 69 years old at the time and a neighbor of the friend Patricia was visiting on the night she disappeared. Audette, a man with a significant criminal history who had previously been declared a dangerous offender, was charged with manslaughter in connection with Patricia's death. His trial began nearly 30 years after Patricia vanished. A crucial part of the prosecution's case was the testimony of one of Audette's former cellmates, who claimed Audette had confessed to being responsible for her death. In May 2026, Serge Audette was found guilty of manslaughter, finally bringing a measure of justice to Patricia's family. The verdict confirmed that Patricia had not abandoned her child, but that her life had been taken from her. Although the conviction brought legal closure and answered the fundamental question of what happened, Patricia Ferguson's body has never been recovered.
