On a cold day in Saskatchewan, fifty-one-year-old Sheree Fertuck, a mother of three and a diligent gravel hauler, vanished without a trace after having lunch with her mother. She was last seen leaving her family's farm near Kenaston on December 7, 2015, on her way back to the gravel pit where she worked. The alarm was raised the next day when her semi-truck was found abandoned in the pit, with her keys, coat, and phone still inside. This discovery immediately sparked concern among her family and the authorities, leading to extensive searches of the area by police and community members, who held onto the hope of her safe return. As days turned into weeks with no sign of Sheree, the investigation into her disappearance intensified. Suspicion soon fell upon her estranged husband, Gregory Fertuck, with whom she was going through a contentious divorce. Investigators learned of a troubled history that included prior instances of assault and threats made by Greg against his wife. Although the case was publicly quiet for a time, police were meticulously building a case against him. This led to a sophisticated and elaborate undercover police operation, often referred to as a "Mr. Big" sting, which went on for about ten months. During this operation, undercover officers posed as members of a criminal organization to gain Greg's trust. The breakthrough in the case came when Greg Fertuck, believing he was confiding in fellow criminals, confessed to murdering Sheree. He provided a detailed account, stating that he went to the gravel pit with a rifle, confronted her about financial matters related to their divorce, and then shot her twice. He also admitted to disposing of her body in a different location. This confession, captured on tape, became the cornerstone of the prosecution's case. Following the confession, in 2019, four years after Sheree vanished, Greg Fertuck was arrested and charged with first-degree murder and offering an indignity to a human body. Despite his later claims that he had fabricated the confession, he was brought to trial. The legal proceedings were lengthy and complex, but ultimately, in June 2024, a judge found him guilty of first-degree murder. The case is a somber illustration of a devoted mother and hardworking woman whose life was tragically cut short. The extensive investigation, marked by a significant undercover operation, was pivotal in achieving a conviction in a case where the victim's remains have never been located, leaving her loved ones without the closure of a proper goodbye.
