On a spring morning, May 11, 1991, in the small community of Matawin, Quebec, six-year-old Yanick Fortin was playing by himself in his family’s backyard. At some point on that Saturday morning, both Yanick and his feline friend vanished without a trace. The disappearance triggered an immediate and massive search effort. Over 150 volunteers from the community joined police in a desperate attempt to find the little boy. The search was extensive, utilizing helicopters to scan the dense woods surrounding the Fortin home, tracker dogs to pick up a scent, and all-terrain vehicles to cover the rugged landscape. Given the proximity of the river, police divers were called in to meticulously search the depths of the Saint-Maurice. The prevailing theory, one that was shared by Yanick's own father, Adrien Fortin, is that a tragic accident occurred. It is believed that the cat may have ventured too close to the river's edge, perhaps to drink, and that Yanick, in a child's innocent attempt to retrieve his pet, fell into the swift-moving water. This heartbreaking possibility offers a potential explanation but no concrete answers, leaving the family with a permanent void and a lifetime of questions. The case of Yanick Fortin's disappearance remains an open and unsolved cold case. Over the years, his story has been shared through various platforms in the hope that someone, somewhere, might hold a piece of information that could finally bring closure to his loved ones. The official investigation continues, and authorities still ask for anyone with information to come forward.
