In the spring of 2026, a 33-year-old man named Parminder Singh Grewal, who had moved to Canada from India with aspirations for a brighter future, was reported missing. He was last seen in the late evening of May 23rd in Duncan, British Columbia, near Allenby Road and Government Street. Concern grew quickly among his friends and family when he remained out of contact, as this was uncharacteristic of him. Described as a South Asian male, six feet tall with a lean build and a shaved head, he was last seen wearing a blue zippered hooded jacket, a black shirt and pants, black boots, and a black baseball cap, while carrying a grocery bag. The initial report of his disappearance was made to the Victoria police on May 25th, which launched an extensive search effort. The search for Parminder involved a significant mobilization of resources, with the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP, Cowichan Search and Rescue, and other volunteer organizations joining the efforts. The investigation revealed that he had traveled from Victoria, where he resided, to Duncan via a rideshare service on the day he was last seen. Despite the comprehensive search of the area, which included assistance from Nanaimo, Ladysmith, and Salt Spring Island search and rescue teams, no immediate signs of him were found. The official search was eventually suspended, pending new information, though his friends and community members continued their own efforts to locate him, hoping for his safe return. His family, particularly his brother who lives in Ontario, was left in a state of painful uncertainty, unsure of why he was in the Duncan area to begin with. Tragically, the search came to a somber end when Parminder's body was discovered in a wooded area near Duncan on June 13th. The heartbreaking news was confirmed to his family a few days later. Parminder had come to Canada in 2023 as an international worker, filled with dreams and a determination to build a better life for himself and to support his family back in his home village of Dharour, India. He was diligently working at a farm and in the process of trying to secure a visa. In the wake of this devastating loss, his family started a fundraising campaign to cover the funeral expenses and the costs of repatriating his body to India, so they could perform his final rites and say their last goodbyes in his homeland. The case of Parminder Singh Grewal is a sorrowful story of a young man who sought a new beginning in a foreign land, only for his life to be cut short. The community's response and the extensive search efforts highlight the concern for his well-being, but ultimately, the outcome was one of profound loss for his loved ones.
