In the winter of 1998, a 29-year-old woman named Michelle Gurney vanished from the Downtown Eastside of Vancouver, British Columbia. A member of the Nisga'a First Nation, Michelle was last seen on December 11, 1998, outside the St. James Community Society building. It wasn't until ten days later that her social worker reported her missing, marking the beginning of a long and painful period of uncertainty for those who knew her. Born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Michelle's life was marked by personal challenges. In 1986, at the age of 17, she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. This led to her living in various group homes and participating in outpatient care programs over the years. Michelle's journey brought her to Vancouver in 1991, the same year she became a mother to a son. Sadly, due to her circumstances, she was unable to care for him and lost custody when he was just an infant. The following year, she moved to a group home in Penticton but made regular trips back to Vancouver to visit her son. By 1995, she had moved back to Vancouver and was residing in the Portland Hotel in the Downtown Eastside. At the time of her disappearance, she was known to be involved in a high-risk lifestyle that included drug use and sex work. She had been making plans to move to Chilliwack with her boyfriend, a move that was cautioned against due to fewer available mental health resources in that area. Michelle is described as having long, black hair, brown eyes, a medium build, and a dark complexion. She stood at 5 feet 4 inches and weighed approximately 99 to 100 pounds at the time she went missing. Over the years, her case has been included in discussions and reports concerning the numerous missing and murdered Indigenous women in Canada. There has been speculation that she may have been a victim of convicted serial killer Robert Pickton. As of a 2012 report from the B.C. Missing Women Commission of Inquiry, there was no record of her death, and she had not been found. The case of Michelle Gurney remains a somber and unresolved story, representing one of many women who disappeared from Vancouver's Downtown Eastside, leaving behind unanswered questions and a family still waiting for answers.
