On a summer day in 1966, a sixteen-year-old Indigenous boy named Ronnie Harper went missing from Red Sucker Lake in Manitoba. The young man, born on August 31, 1949, was with a friend on the lake, having gone out in a canoe to help retrieve a fishing net. The last time anyone saw Ronnie, he was wearing a blue nylon hooded jacket, blue denim jeans, and black rubber boots. He was described as having a thin build, standing at five feet nine inches tall and weighing around 146 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. The events of that day would lead to a lasting mystery, leaving a family and a community with unanswered questions. The tragic incident began when Ronnie and his friend paddled out onto Red Sucker Lake. While attempting to pull a net from the water, they encountered difficulty as it seemed to be weighed down. As they pulled harder on the line, it suddenly gave way, causing a rapid shift in the canoe's balance and leading to it capsizing. Both boys were thrown into the water. They tried to make their way to the shore by holding onto the overturned canoe and pushing it through the water. It was during this struggle for survival that the situation took a devastating turn. As they slowly moved towards the safety of the shoreline, Ronnie reportedly told his friend that he was losing his strength and could not hold on any longer. His companion, who managed to continue pushing the canoe, eventually reached the shore. Tragically, when he looked back for his friend, Ronnie was gone. An immediate search was launched to find the missing teenager, but despite the efforts, Ronnie Harper was never located. It is presumed that he drowned in the waters of Red Sucker Lake that day. The case of Ronnie Harper is a somber reminder of a young life lost to a sudden and unforeseen accident, and for decades, his disappearance has remained an unresolved sorrow for those who knew him.
