In the winter of 1982, a twelve-year-old boy named Robert Heintz vanished into the northern Ontario wilderness, leaving behind a mystery that has endured for decades. On December 1st of that year, Robert, a young First Nations boy, was living at the New Horizons Boys Home in Kearns, Ontario. He attended Larder Lake Public School, and on that fateful day during his lunch hour, he and some friends made a decision to venture into the bush behind the school grounds. The group of boys reportedly had a plan to run away and hide out in the woods. Robert was last seen that morning, dressed in a jean jacket and running shoes, ill-prepared for the dropping temperatures that would come with the night. As the hours turned into a cold and anxious night, the boys did not return. The following day, Robert's friends emerged from the dense forest, reportedly cold and hungry, but Robert was not with them. The story that emerged from the other boys was that an argument had occurred over the size of their campfire, with Robert supposedly becoming upset and walking off by himself deeper into the bush. He was never seen or heard from again. The friends he was with were described by a person who gave them a ride as looking disturbed and frightened. The disappearance of Robert Heintz has left his family and community with unanswered questions for over four decades. At the time he went missing, he was described as being 4'9" tall and weighing approximately 90 pounds. His case is a somber reminder of the vulnerability of youth and the lasting pain that a disappearance can inflict on loved ones. Despite the passage of time, the search for answers continues, fueled by the hope that one day, the truth of what happened to the young boy who walked into the woods will come to light. The case is an enduring mystery, a story of a child who seemingly vanished without a trace, leaving a void in the lives of those who knew him.
