The days that followed his failure to appear at the family gathering turned into a frantic search, which has now stretched into decades of uncertainty for his family. Standing at five feet eleven inches and weighing around 150 pounds, with brown hair, a beard, a mustache, and hazel eyes, Bruce was a man his family never gave up on finding. His brother, David, remembered him as "the best person I've ever known he was a really great big brother. and he's worth fighting for." In their relentless search, his family has visited shelters and distributed his photograph, showing him both with and without a beard, to people living on the streets in the hopes that someone might recognize him. The profound and lasting impact of Bruce's disappearance prompted his sister, filmmaker Wendy Hill-Tout, to create a documentary titled "Insanity." The film serves not only as a search for her brother but also as a poignant exploration of mental illness and the systemic failures that families often encounter when trying to help a loved one in crisis. Through sharing her family's personal tragedy, she aimed to shed light on the broader societal issues surrounding mental health care and to personalize the stories of those who are often overlooked.
