In the late hours of a cold February evening in 2009, 33-year-old Jody Rae Hockett vanished from Grande Prairie, Alberta, leaving behind a life that included two children and a family who loved her. On February 22nd of that year, Jody had been at a friend's apartment for a gathering. She left the get-together with the intention of coming back, but she never returned. The last confirmed sighting of Jody was outside the York Hotel in the downtown area of Grande Prairie, where she was seen getting into an older-model white car. Five days later, on February 27, 2009, she was officially reported as a missing person to the Grande Prairie Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Adding to the unsettling nature of her disappearance was the fact that her purse and phone were left with the people she had been with earlier that night. Her family has stressed that this was highly out of character for her, as she was known to stay in regular contact with her loved ones and would not have willingly left without her personal belongings. At the time of her disappearance, Jody was described as being approximately 5 feet 5 inches tall, with blue eyes and a fair complexion. Her hair was dyed a strawberry-blonde color. When she was last seen, she was wearing jeans, a tank top, a black zip-up hoodie, and high-heeled shoes that were trimmed with fur. She had several distinguishing tattoos, including a heart on her buttocks, a snake on the right side of her pelvis, and tribal art across her lower back, as well as a scar on her left thigh. It was also noted that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and had stopped taking her medication prior to her going missing. Law enforcement has mentioned that she was known to them and lived what they described as a "high-risk lifestyle," though specific details about what this entailed have not been publicly elaborated on. Over the many years that have passed since Jody Rae Hockett was last seen, there has been no confirmed contact with her. Her family has never stopped searching for answers and firmly believes that she would not have voluntarily disappeared, especially given her devotion to her two children. They have voiced their fears that she met with foul play and have advocated for her case to be treated as a homicide investigation. Despite the passage of time and the ongoing investigation, no charges have been laid, and no suspects have been publicly named in connection with her disappearance. The case remains an unsolved missing person file, a painful open wound for a family who continues to hope for a resolution and to one day learn what happened to Jody after she stepped into that white car on a winter night.
