A 25-year-old engineering student at McMaster University, Aju was in his second season as a tree planter, working in a desolate area approximately 70 kilometers north of White River. On May 15, 2006, what started as a regular workday took a sharp turn after a dispute with his supervisor. Aju was instructed to replant a section of trees from the previous day, a request he refused. In a moment of frustration, he reportedly threw down his equipment, changed from his work boots into running shoes, and walked away from the site. He was last seen by co-workers at about 4:30 p.m., walking alone on a dusty logging road. The initial response to Aju's departure was one of anticipation; he was expected to wait at a designated spot to be picked up at the end of the workday. However, when the crew arrived to collect him around 4:05 p.m., he was nowhere to be found. As hours turned into evening, concern grew, and by 9 p.m., the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were contacted. The following morning, a comprehensive search was launched, involving multiple OPP departments, canine units, and helicopters. For a week, authorities scoured the dense bush, but found no trace of the missing student. Back at the camp, Aju's personal belongings were found undisturbed, including his driver's license, Canadian and Nigerian passports, and phone cards, items essential for any planned departure. In the years that have passed since Aju Iroaga vanished, his family has been left with unanswered questions and a profound sense of loss. Frustrated with the official investigation, which they felt was insufficient, they hired their own private investigators to delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding his disappearance. They have expressed their belief that foul play may have been involved, a theory not actively pursued by the police who stated they did not suspect it. The family's request for a coroner's inquest was also denied. This case remains an unsettling mystery; a young man on the cusp of his 26th birthday walked away from a disagreement at a remote worksite and was never seen again, leaving behind a life full of potential and a family still searching for answers. A $50,000 reward has been offered for information that could lead to his whereabouts.
