Her intended destination was a friend's cabin on Vancouver Island where she planned to attend a festival. To get there, she was hitchhiking, a common mode of travel for young people at the time. Diane's journey had taken her from Okanagan Falls, and her goal was to reach Parksville on Vancouver Island. The last known person to have seen her was a Royal Canadian Mounted Police highway patrol officer who saw her near Hope. She was carrying a small, green cotton packsack and was dressed for the road in blue jeans, a plaid jacket, and hiking boots. Her appearance was distinctive, not only because of her height and her canine companion but also because she had pierced ears and a pierced nose and was pigeon-toed in both feet. Despite these details, and the fact that she was seen on a major highway, this would be the last confirmed sighting of Diane Gay Jaspersen. The days turned into weeks, and Diane never arrived at her friend's cabin, nor did she ever make it to the festival.
