In the early morning hours of July 13, 1985, a 29-year-old man named Anthony Kootenay was last seen in a remote area near Fort McMurray, Alberta. An Indigenous man, Anthony was working at the Algar Tower fire camp, situated roughly 73 kilometers south of the city. At approximately 3:00 a.m., he walked away from the camp. In the days leading up to his disappearance, colleagues had noted that he seemed to be struggling with his mental health, possibly related to alcohol abuse. When he vanished, it is believed he was wearing blue running shoes without laces, navy blue pants, a black long-sleeved sweater, a gold earring, and a black cap. Distinctive features included several tattoos: an iron cross and the name "Tony K" on his left forearm, and the name "Tony" across the four fingers of his left hand. He also had a pierced left ear. Following his departure from the fire camp, it is thought that Anthony may have attempted to hitchhike from the area. This theory is supported by a passing motorist who reported seeing someone matching his description on the road. In response to his disappearance, an extensive search was launched, utilizing both ground crews and helicopters to scour the vast and rugged landscape. Despite these efforts, no trace of Anthony was found. Later that year, and into the next, a glimmer of hope emerged with two unconfirmed sightings of him at the Grand Hotel in Edmonton, Alberta. These sightings occurred on December 23, 1985, and January 16, 1986, but they did not lead to his location. The disappearance of Anthony Kootenay has remained an unresolved case for decades, leaving his family and community without answers. The initial investigation, prompted by his abrupt departure from the fire camp, explored the possibility that he was attempting to travel away from the area. The extensive search operation at the time of his disappearance yielded no clues as to his whereabouts. The subsequent unconfirmed sightings in Edmonton offered a brief but ultimately unfruitful lead. Since those potential sightings in late 1985 and early 1986, there have been no further reports of anyone seeing or hearing from him. The case remains open, a long-standing mystery marked by the troubling circumstances of his departure and the enduring silence that followed.
