In March of 2011, a young man from Toronto, Ontario, named Steven Lapowich, then 30 years old, made plans for a trip that would lead to his mysterious disappearance. He was last seen at Toronto's Pearson International Airport, intending to embark on what his family later learned was a planned three-week vacation to Costa Rica. The circumstances surrounding his departure were unusual from the beginning. Steven, a pension analyst and a York University graduate, had not booked any time off from his job for such a lengthy trip, nor had he mentioned his travel plans to his close-knit family or his girlfriend. This was out of character for a man described by his mother as sensitive to the needs of his family and others. His trip was the first time he had ever decided to travel alone. The initial confusion surrounding his plans deepened at the airport. On or around March 24, 2011, Steven arrived at the airport only to find that the flight he intended to take to Costa Rica was not available. Instead of returning home, he purchased a new ticket for a flight to Puerto Rico, scheduled to depart a few days later, on March 27. Investigators and his family have been unable to determine where Steven stayed or what he did during the days between his initial attempt to fly and his actual departure. It was confirmed that he did board the flight and successfully arrived in Puerto Rico. However, after he left the airport there, his trail vanished completely. There were no records of him checking into any hotels or boarding any connecting flights to his original destination of Costa Rica or anywhere else. In the years following his disappearance, his family has been left with agonizing questions and a painful void. They have made public appeals for information and even offered a reward of up to $30,000 for any details that might lead to his safe return. The investigation involved multiple agencies, including the Toronto Police Service and Interpol, who flagged his passport in case he attempted to cross any borders. Despite these efforts, there has been no activity on his bank accounts or social media since he went missing. His mother expressed her heartbreak, stating she fluctuated between hope and despair. The case remains a baffling mystery, marked by the strange and uncharacteristic decisions Steven made before he was last seen. The sudden, unannounced solo trip, the change in destination, and the complete lack of communication have left his loved ones and investigators searching for answers as to what happened to the sensitive and caring man after he landed in Puerto Rico.
