On September 12, 1982, Harold and his girlfriend embarked on a canoeing trip on Lake Winnipegosis, setting out from the Overflowing River. The couple was in separate canoes, carrying their supplies for what should have been a memorable excursion into nature. As they ventured further from the river and onto the expansive lake, they were met with large, imposing waves. The turbulent water began to swamp their canoes, a perilous situation for any boater. The exact age of Harold at the time of his disappearance is not publicly available, but his physical description notes him as being 67 inches tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. He also had distinct scars on his left ankle and near his right eye on his forehead. The situation on the water escalated quickly and dangerously. Harold's girlfriend's canoe was the first to be overturned by the powerful waves. As she struggled in the cold water to right her vessel, she could still see Harold in his canoe. Despite her efforts, she was unable to get back into her canoe but managed to cling to it, eventually making her way to the safety of the shore. Tragically, by the time she reached land, Harold was no longer in sight. The vastness of Lake Winnipegosis had seemingly swallowed him and his canoe whole, leaving no immediate trace of what had happened to him in those desperate final moments. In the aftermath of Harold's disappearance, search efforts were undertaken to locate him. While Harold himself was never found, several of his personal belongings were recovered from the area. Among the items found were his passport and a lifejacket that was believed to be his. The discovery of these items painted a grim picture of his fate. The official presumption in the case of Harold Josef Larcher is that he drowned in the tumultuous waters of Lake Winnipegosis on that fateful September day.
