In May of 1967, a young Indigenous boy named Donald Jimmy Lariviere, who was three and a half years old, disappeared from the remote community of Pinehouse, Saskatchewan. The last time anyone saw Donald was at the local airstrip in the company of his father. The exact date of his disappearance is noted as May 1, 1967. On that day, his father had fallen asleep at the airstrip. When he awoke, Donald was nowhere to be found. His father returned home without the little boy, and what happened to Donald at that airstrip has remained a mystery ever since. The passage of time has unfortunately obscured many of the critical details that are often vital in missing persons investigations. Specifics regarding the clothing Donald was wearing on the day he vanished have not been publicly documented, and a detailed physical description beyond his age and Indigenous ethnicity is largely unknown. This lack of information has presented significant challenges to investigators and has left his family with a lifetime of unanswered questions. Despite the decades that have passed, the case remains open and is handled by the F Division RCMP Historical Case Unit. A peculiar and hopeful, yet ultimately unresolved, clue emerged sometime after Donald’s disappearance. A friend of the Lariviere family reportedly saw a photograph in a newspaper published in the United States. The image was of a young boy, who the friend believed strongly resembled Donald, holding a black puppy. The caption beneath the photo read, "Black — goes by Nikki." When the family friend contacted the newspaper to inquire about the boy, they were allegedly told that the child had "already been claimed." It has never been publicly confirmed if the boy in the photograph was indeed Donald. This lingering detail adds another layer of complexity and sorrow to the case, which is an overview of a family's enduring search for a child who vanished without a trace from a northern Saskatchewan community.
