In the early summer of 2004, 53-year-old Louis Charles Lathlin prepared to travel from his home in The Pas, Manitoba, to Winnipeg for a medical appointment. On June 14th, his wife saw him as he was leaving for this appointment, which was scheduled for the following day. He traveled light, taking only personal grooming items with him. This departure would be the last time he was seen by his family, marking the beginning of a long and painful period of uncertainty for his loved ones. Following his departure, Lathlin did make contact with his wife. He called her to let her know that he would be extending his stay in Winnipeg because he had another appointment later that week. He called again on the subsequent Saturday to ask his wife for money. She sent the funds as he had requested, but in a troubling turn of events, the money was never claimed. By the following Tuesday, the unclaimed funds were returned to her, and no further communication was ever received from Louis. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5'9" tall and weighing 245 pounds, with white hair and brown eyes. He had a scar on his forehead and was without his dentures. He was last seen wearing a black jacket, blue denim jeans, and a white t-shirt. Concern for his well-being grew, and on August 10th, 2004, his wife officially reported him as a missing person to the RCMP. The investigation into his disappearance brought to light some of the personal challenges Lathlin faced. He had a history of alcoholism and had spent time living on the streets, including in Edmonton where he had established ties. Years of alcohol abuse had also led to various medical concerns, which may have necessitated his trip to Winnipeg. Despite the passage of time, the case of Louis Charles Lathlin's disappearance remains unresolved, leaving his family without answers and his whereabouts a mystery.
