When he returned home at approximately 2:30 p.m., he found the house empty and the back door unlocked. A sense of unease must have quickly set in, as it was discovered that Jian Ping had left without any of her personal belongings. Her purse, wallet, credit cards, and cell phone were all left behind. Crucially, all of the baby's necessities, including the diaper bag, stroller, and car seat, also remained in the house.
The immediate hours and days following their disappearance were filled with urgent activity. The Longueuil police were notified, and an extensive search was launched. Investigators scoured the area, checking hospitals, hotels, and transportation services, and reviewing security videos from nearby stores, but found no conclusive evidence of their whereabouts. The search efforts expanded to include police dogs, helicopters that surveyed the surrounding areas, and even checks of the nearby river's shores. Despite these efforts, no trace of the mother or her young child was found. Jian Ping Li was described as an intelligent woman who was a loving mother to her three children. She was an active member of the Montreal Chinese Alliance Grace Church.
