On a summer evening, July 21, 1995, 24-year-old Erwyn Cecil Lippett and his friend, Simon Kirk Weidemann, set out for a canoe ride on Lake Huron. The two men, who were on a camping trip with their families at the Brucedale Conservation Area near Port Elgin, Ontario, planned to do some fishing. They left the shore around 8 p.m. in a 16-foot green canoe, but as the night wore on, they did not return to their campsite. At the time of his disappearance, Erwyn, who was known as "Rody," was a young father to his son, Anthony, who was not even a year old. Erwyn was described as having a large mole on his forehead at his receding hairline; tragically, his family reported that he was not a swimmer. The following day, when the two men failed to appear, authorities were alerted and an extensive search of the air, ground, and water began. The search efforts led to the discovery of their canoe, which was found partially submerged and filled with water approximately 10.5 kilometers from the Port Elgin Harbour. Searchers also recovered two paddles and two life-jackets floating in the water near the canoe, but there was no sign of Erwyn or Simon. The discovery of the canoe and personal items left their families with devastating uncertainty. The official belief was that the two young fathers had drowned, yet their bodies were never found. For decades, the disappearance has haunted the families of both men, leaving them with unanswered questions. Erwyn’s son, now an adult with only stories and photographs of the father he never knew, continues to seek closure. The case remains an open investigation with the South Bruce OPP. Over the years, some witness statements have emerged with possible sightings of the men after they were presumed to have drowned, leading to speculation about whether their disappearance was an accident or a planned event. These unconfirmed reports, coupled with some discrepancies in the initial accounts of what happened, have created a complex and painful puzzle. The overarching summary of the case is one of profound and lasting loss; two young men vanished during a simple fishing trip, leaving their children to grow up without them and their families to grapple with the ambiguity of their fate on a summer night in 1995.
