In the early evening hours of July 9, 2023, a 22-year-old University of British Columbia student named Ryan Ruining Liu walked away from his family home in Richmond, British Columbia. He departed from the 8400 block of Dayton Court at approximately 8 p.m. and was seen boarding a transit bus a short time later. This was the last time his family would see him, marking the beginning of a distressing and unresolved disappearance that would leave his loved ones in a state of profound worry. Friends and family grew deeply concerned when he did not return and could not be contacted, as this was entirely out of character for him. The investigation into Ryan's whereabouts pieced together some of his movements after he left Richmond. Investigators discovered surveillance footage that captured him later that same evening in West Vancouver. At around 10 p.m., he was recorded walking southbound on Taylor Way near Main Street. Authorities believe he was heading in the direction of the iconic Lions Gate Bridge. At the time of his disappearance, Ryan was described as an Asian male with a slim build, standing 5'11" and weighing 180 pounds. He has a fair complexion, short, balding black hair, brown eyes, and a black mustache with other facial hair. He was last seen wearing a distinctive white t-shirt with a colourful pattern on the front, light green or beige shorts, black running shoes with white socks, sunglasses, and a yellow bucket hat. He was also carrying a brown and white backpack. In the weeks and months that followed, both the Richmond RCMP and Ryan's family made repeated public appeals for any information that could help locate him. Despite following up on numerous leads, authorities have been unable to find him. His family shared a heartfelt statement, expressing that they, along with his friends, are waiting for him and praying for his safety and well-being. The case has since grown cold, leaving a painful void for those who know and love him. The overview of the case is that of a young man who vanished after taking a bus and walking towards a major landmark, with his last known movements captured on video but his ultimate destination and fate remaining a deeply concerning mystery.
