In the summer of 1988, a young woman's life, filled with anticipation for the future, took an inexplicable turn, leaving a void that has been felt for decades in the communities around Owen Sound, Ontario. Lisa Leona Maas, a 22-year-old woman who was five months pregnant, was looking forward to the birth of her child. Having just moved back into her parents' home after the end of a relationship, she went out for a night with friends on July 16, 1988. In the early morning hours of July 17, she was last seen leaving a house party in Woodford, Ontario. She left the party with a male acquaintance to retrieve her car, which was parked at his nearby home. According to the man, he saw her get into her 1976 Plymouth Fury and drive away at approximately 4:30 a.m. Lisa Maas was never seen or heard from again. The days following her disappearance only deepened the mystery and heightened the concern of her loved ones and the community. Two days later, on July 19, Lisa's car was discovered abandoned and stuck in the mud on a remote, impassable bush lane used by local farmers near Annan, Ontario. The scene was unsettling; the car's doors and trunk were open, and its contents were scattered about, suggesting a struggle or a frantic search. It was clear that attempts had been made to free the vehicle from the mud. Those who knew Lisa found the location of her car to be highly suspicious, as she was familiar with the area and would have known that the lane was not a suitable road for her vehicle, especially in the middle of the night. Weeks later, a search party made another troubling discovery: Lisa's driver's license was found along a different sideroad, lying on top of tall grass as if it had been carelessly tossed from a moving vehicle. Despite the passage of time, the investigation into what happened to Lisa Maas has continued, marked by extensive searches and ongoing appeals for information. Over the years, law enforcement has conducted numerous searches by air, land, and water, sifting through gravel and exploring wells and crevices in the hope of finding any trace of the young woman or her unborn child. Police have long suspected that she was a victim of foul play and that the person responsible was someone she knew. While investigators have indicated that they have focused on a primary suspect after initially considering several individuals, no charges have ever been laid in her disappearance. The case remains an open wound for her family and the community, a haunting mystery of a young life, and that of her unborn baby, that vanished into the pre-dawn darkness of a rural Ontario summer morning.
