In the small town of Mundare, Alberta, a community was shaken by the sudden and unsettling disappearance of 44-year-old Deanne June MacNeil. The last confirmed sightings of Deanne were on the morning of Thursday, November 28, 2013. She was seen on surveillance footage at the Mundare Liquor Store and also visited a Servus Credit Union ATM. Later that day, she was at a friend's house. A friend later recalled a brief and seemingly ordinary exchange with her as she left the liquor store, a conversation that would prove to be their last. He remembered her asking if she would see him the next day, to which he replied he would likely drop by for a beer. At the time of her disappearance, Deanne was described as a Caucasian female, standing 5'5" tall and weighing approximately 125 pounds, with hazel eyes and long brown hair. She was last seen wearing an orange winter jacket, a black t-shirt, and jeans. Two days later, on November 30, 2013, a close friend of Deanne's grew deeply concerned. It was highly unusual for her to be out of contact for such a period, as they were accustomed to speaking multiple times a day. This profound sense of unease prompted the friend to report Deanne missing to the Vegreville RCMP. An investigation was launched, and what quickly became apparent was the baffling nature of her departure. Deanne had left behind all of her personal belongings, including her purse and wallet. Her landlord and roommate noted that she "just disappeared" without a word, leaving everything behind. This detail was particularly troubling to those who knew her, as it suggested she had not planned to be gone for long. Friends described her disappearance as completely out of character, with one stating, "She was always here, she'd always phone me...She kind of just vanished." In the weeks and months that followed, extensive searches were conducted in and around Mundare. The RCMP's Special Tactical Operations team was brought in to systematically search the town, meticulously examining vacant lots, sheds, and any place where a person might be concealed. Despite these exhaustive efforts, no trace of Deanne was found. The case remained open, a painful and unanswered question for her friends, family, and the community. In January 2018, a significant development was announced by the RCMP's historical homicide unit. After years of investigation, they revealed that Deanne MacNeil's disappearance was now being treated as a homicide. Investigators stated their belief that there are people who hold information crucial to resolving the case. While her remains have not been located, the reclassification of her case underscored the tragic reality that she was likely a victim of foul play. The investigation into what happened to Deanne June MacNeil remains an open and active homicide case.
