In the spring of 2007, a 45-year-old woman named Shelley Marie Mathieu-Read vanished from her home in Sarnia, Ontario. She was last definitively seen on May 20, 2007, though a neighbor recalled seeing her ten days earlier on May 10. Shelley, a mother with blonde hair and hazel eyes, had moved to the city with her common-law husband, Thomas Moffit, in an effort to leave behind a past involving substance abuse. Her daughter described her as a good person who, despite her struggles, was not someone who lived on the street. After weeks turned into months with no contact, her concerned daughter officially reported her missing on July 29, 2007, sparking an extensive investigation by the Sarnia Police Service. As investigators delved into her disappearance, the case quickly shifted from a missing person's report to a homicide investigation. Police came to believe that Shelley had met with a violent end. Suspicion fell upon her partner, Thomas Moffit, who was arrested in August 2007 and charged with second-degree murder. His sister, Kathy Long, was also implicated and charged with being an accessory after the fact. The police theory was that Moffit had killed Shelley and then used his sister's black Ford F250 pickup truck to dispose of her body somewhere in the rural landscape between Watford and Wyoming. This led to large-scale searches by nearly two dozen officers in southeast Lambton County, as authorities appealed to landowners to check their properties for any signs of human remains or a recent burial. The subsequent trial brought forth a chilling narrative, resting heavily on the testimony of Moffit's own sister. Kathy Long told the court that her brother had confessed the killing to her during a meeting at a bar, stating that Shelley "ain't coming back." She recounted how Moffit admitted to breaking Shelley's neck in the hallway of their apartment building after an argument. Based largely on this harrowing testimony, a jury convicted Thomas Moffit of second-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison. Despite the conviction and the determined efforts of law enforcement, the body of Shelley Marie Mathieu-Read has never been found, leaving her loved ones without a final place to lay her to rest. The case is a somber reminder of a life cut short, officially presumed to have ended in homicide, though the full story of her final moments remains known only to her killer.
