In the winter of 2012, a 54-year-old man named Roderic Paul Maynard vanished from the scenic landscape of British Columbia, leaving behind a life connected to the sea and a community of concerned friends and family. An experienced sailor, Roderic was well-known in the Vancouver and Victoria area, where he skillfully operated ferries. His familiarity with the vast waterways of the world was extensive, and he harbored dreams of one day retiring to the Caribbean, specifically the St. Maarten area. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as being 5'11" and weighing 220 pounds, with short, white-grey hair and brown eyes. There was a large mole under one of his eyes on his left cheek. When he was last seen, he was thought to be wearing a black trench coat and blue jeans. The last confirmed sighting of Roderic occurred on the morning of January 23, 2012. At approximately 10:45 a.m., a friend gave him a ride from his home on Sandpiper Close in North Saanich to the Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal. It was his intention to walk onto one of the ferries, as he had left his own vehicle at his residence. Friends were under the impression that Roderic was heading to a rehabilitation facility to seek treatment for alcohol abuse, a personal issue he had shared with them before his departure. His last known location before this was on Salt Spring Island. It wasn't until weeks later, on February 14, that family and friends, unable to make contact with him, officially reported him as a missing person. The investigation into Roderic's disappearance has yielded few answers over the years, and his case remains unsolved. Authorities have stated that there is no indication of foul play involved in his disappearance. The circumstances surrounding his vanishing are perplexing; a man with a profound connection to the ocean and the skills to navigate it seemingly disappeared without a trace after being dropped off at a ferry terminal. His friends and family have been left in a state of prolonged uncertainty, holding onto hope while grappling with the pain of not knowing what happened to him. The case is an overview of a man with deep maritime roots who, after expressing an intention to seek help for personal struggles, vanished from the very terminals that were so familiar to him, leaving a wake of unanswered questions.
