On a Saturday afternoon, August 12, 1989, 19-year-old Kimberley Ann McAndrew finished her shift as a cashier at the Canadian Tire on Quinpool Road in Halifax, Nova Scotia. At approximately 4:20 p.m., she left work, looking forward to an evening with her boyfriend to celebrate his birthday and attend the local Buskers Festival. Kimberley, a student at Dalhousie University, was last seen wearing pleated, ankle-length navy cotton slacks, a white short-sleeved "Esprit" t-shirt with red and green squares, a navy cotton oversized cardigan, and jade green flat-heeled slip-on loafers. Her boyfriend was scheduled to pick her up at 5 p.m., but when he arrived, she was gone. He drove the route she would have walked home but saw no sign of her. An unconfirmed report later placed her at the Gardenia Flower Shop in Penhorn Mall in Dartmouth, where an employee believed she had purchased a balloon and a rose. The hours turned into days, and Kimberley never returned to her apartment. Her family knew immediately that something was wrong, as this was completely out of character for her. Described as quiet and not a risk-taker, she was close to her family and had a tight-knit group of friends. She was so cautious that she disliked walking by herself even in her smaller hometown of Parrsboro. In the days following her disappearance, she was scheduled to have her braces removed, an appointment she had been eagerly anticipating. Her bank accounts were never touched, and no one has heard from her since she vanished. The disappearance was especially agonizing for her father, a former RCMP officer, who tirelessly pursued every possible lead until his death, never learning what happened to his daughter. Over the decades, the investigation into Kimberley's disappearance has remained active, haunting her family and the community. Halifax Regional Police have conducted numerous interviews and searches, looking for any sign of her. Searches have taken place in various locations, including Fleming Park, Point Pleasant Park, and a property in Shad Bay, but none have yielded any answers. Police have considered persons of interest over the years, including serial killer Michael Wayne McGray and convicted sex offender Andrew Paul Johnson, but no direct links to Kimberley's case have been established. The case is part of the Nova Scotia Department of Justice Rewards for Major Unsolved Crimes Program, which offers a significant reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for her disappearance. Despite the passage of time, investigators and her family hold onto the hope that someone has the information needed to finally bring answers and a measure of peace to those who have missed her for so long.
