In the summer of 2026, a sense of community and concern gripped the small city of Elliot Lake, Ontario, following the disappearance of a local resident. Brian McLean, a 68-year-old man, was enjoying a swim at the city's Spruce Beach on July 26th. It was a pleasant afternoon when a 911 call was placed at approximately 4:30 p.m., reporting a swimmer in distress. Eyewitnesses last saw Mr. McLean swimming towards a rock located about 150 metres from the shoreline before he went underwater and did not resurface. At the time he went missing, he was described as being six feet tall, weighing approximately 200 pounds, with a medium build and short white hair, and was last seen wearing a pair of navy blue shorts. The report of a missing swimmer initiated an immediate and comprehensive search and rescue operation. The East Algoma Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), alongside the Elliot Lake Fire Department, coordinated the extensive efforts. The search encompassed a wide area, with teams conducting thorough shoreline and water searches. The operation utilized a variety of specialized units, including the OPP Emergency Response Team, a marine unit, the Sault Ste. Marie OPP canine unit, and remotely piloted aerial systems, more commonly known as drones. As the search continued into the following day, the OPP's specialized Underwater Search and Recovery Unit was brought in to aid in the efforts to locate Mr. McLean. Tragically, the search for Brian McLean came to a sorrowful conclusion on the evening of July 27, 2026. At approximately 5:15 p.m., the OPP's Underwater Search and Recovery Unit located and recovered his body from the waters east of Spruce Beach. A post-mortem examination was scheduled to be conducted in Sault Ste. Marie to determine the official cause of death. The investigation into the incident remained ongoing as authorities worked to understand the full circumstances of the tragic event. The case of Brian McLean's disappearance serves as a somber reminder of the unforeseen dangers that can arise during recreational water activities, and the profound impact such a loss has on a close-knit community.
