In the late summer of 2017, the quiet community of South Rawdon, Nova Scotia, was struck with the unsettling disappearance of a beloved elderly resident. Martin Bertram McLearn, an 89-year-old man, was last seen at his home on Elliot Road on Sunday, August 13, 2017. His nephew had seen him around 11:30 a.m., but when he returned a few hours later, Mr. McLearn was gone. Concern quickly mounted as Martin, who lived with moderate dementia, was nowhere to be found. At the time of his disappearance, it was believed he was wearing rubber boots that were old and cracked, dark-colored "Dickies" brand work pants, a button-up shirt, and possibly a tan, waist-level overcoat and a ball cap. He was described as being 5'6" tall, weighing between 150 and 160 pounds, with white hair, blue eyes, and glasses. It was also noted that he may have walked with a slight limp. An extensive search was launched in the immediate aftermath of his disappearance. The terrain surrounding his home was described as thick, dense, and heavy brush, making the search effort incredibly demanding for the crews involved. Ground Search and Rescue volunteers from across Nova Scotia, along with community members, scoured the heavily wooded area. The search efforts were comprehensive, utilizing specialized techniques, a Department of Natural Resources helicopter, all-terrain vehicles, and the RCMP Police Dog Services. The search was focused on a 300-meter radius around his home, a method based on historical data from similar cases. Despite these exhaustive efforts, which continued for four days, there was tragically no sign of Martin McLearn. The official search was suspended at midnight on August 17, 2017. The years that followed did not bring any new information or leads in the case of Martin Bertram McLearn. He had been a man who enjoyed the simple things in life; he loved animals and working in his garden. Born in South Rawdon, he had spent many years out west working for a telephone company and managing a wheat farm before returning to his Nova Scotia home in the early 1980s to run his own lumber mill until retirement. His disappearance left a void in the lives of his family and community. After a long period with no contact or sightings, Martin Bertram McLearn was declared legally deceased by the Supreme Court of Nova Scotia on May 1, 2025, bringing a somber, legal end to his missing person case, though his whereabouts remain unknown. The case remains a sorrowful mystery, a testament to a life that concluded with an unanswered question, leaving his loved ones with memories of a man who tinkered in his yard and simply vanished from his home.
