On July 14, 2009, Yashpal Mehay, a devoted husband and father from Surrey, British Columbia, began a routine journey that he had made every other week for the previous three years. The 45-year-old was driving to Clinton, B.C., where he co-owned and operated a Petro Canada gas station with his brother-in-law. He was last seen at approximately 3 p.m. on video surveillance at a Staples store in Chilliwack, appearing to be alone and not in any distress. His family reported him missing on July 15, 2009, when he failed to arrive at his destination. Mr. Mehay was driving his grey 2004 Mazda MPV with British Columbia license plate 494KVK. At the time of his disappearance, he was described as a South Asian male, approximately 5'7" and 185 lbs, with short black hair, brown eyes, and a black moustache. He was last seen wearing a striped green and white long-sleeved American Eagle shirt and khaki pants. The disappearance of Yashpal Mehay prompted an extensive and exhaustive search effort. Law enforcement agencies, including the Surrey RCMP, Abbotsford Police, and multiple other RCMP detachments, conducted comprehensive searches by both land and air. The presumed route he would have taken, Highway 1 from Chilliwack to Cache Creek and then north on Highway 97 to Clinton, was thoroughly examined. Authorities also considered and searched alternate routes, such as Highway 12 between Lytton and Lillooet and Highway 99. In addition to the official police investigation, Mr. Mehay's family, in their desperation for answers, organized their own searches. They undertook extensive ground searches and even rented a plane to survey the route he was believed to have taken. Despite these widespread efforts by both police and family, no trace of Mr. Mehay or his vehicle was ever found. The case of Yashpal Mehay remains a perplexing mystery for law enforcement and a source of unending grief for his family. Investigators have noted the unusual nature of his disappearance, as he had no known health problems, addiction issues, or marital difficulties. Furthermore, he had no criminal affiliations or record, and there was no evidence to suggest he had met with foul play. His brother-in-law described the family as "devastated," stating that "Life has come to a standstill for everyone and we have no answers and no direction to lead." The investigation confirmed his last known activities included a purchase at a Costco in Abbotsford, followed by the stop at the Staples in Chilliwack, after which all financial and communication activity ceased. With no new leads, the disappearance of this dedicated family man on a familiar road remains an unsolved and heart-wrenching puzzle.
