On a summer morning in 1985, eight-year-old Nicole Louise Morin was looking forward to a swim with a friend. On July 30th, she left her mother's penthouse apartment on the 20th floor of a building in Etobicoke, Ontario, with plans to meet her friend in the lobby. Just before 11 a.m., Nicole said goodbye to her mother and headed out, carrying a bag with her towel and other swimming items. She was wearing a peach-colored one-piece bathing suit, red shoes, and a green headband.
Fifteen minutes later, when Nicole had not arrived in the lobby, her friend buzzed the apartment again. Nicole was never seen or heard from again.
The disappearance of Nicole sparked what became one of the most extensive missing-person investigations in the history of the Toronto Police Service. A 20-member task force was assembled, and authorities invested more than 25,000 hours into the investigation. The search was immediate and thorough, with police canvassing all 429 units in her apartment complex, even gaining entry to apartments where no one answered. They scoured the building's underground garages, utility rooms, and storage areas. Despite the massive effort, which also involved over 900 residents from the neighborhood, the search yielded no physical evidence related to Nicole's disappearance. A neighbor reported seeing an unidentified blonde woman with a notebook on Nicole's floor about 45 minutes before she vanished, but this potential witness was never identified.
Over the years, the case has remained open, transitioning into a long-term cold case. Authorities and missing child organizations have persistently worked to keep Nicole's story in the public eye, hoping for a breakthrough. They have released several video re-enactments of her last known movements and have periodically issued age-enhanced photographs to show what she might look like as the years passed. Anniversaries of her disappearance are often marked by renewed pleas for information from the public and, at times, the offer of significant rewards for information that could lead to answers.
