In the summer of 2022, a 42-year-old Indigenous woman named Magdalene Mae Oerlemans, known affectionately as Maggie to her friends and family, vanished from her home in Edmonton, Alberta. She was a mother of four, described by loved ones as a woman with a big personality and a loud laugh who, despite her small stature, was impossible to overlook. Maggie was last seen on July 13, 2022, at her apartment building, Astoria Greens, located in the area of 147 Avenue and 92 Street. She stood five feet tall, with a slender build, weighing around 115 pounds. Her appearance was distinguished by her green eyes, long brown hair, ears pierced from top to bottom, and a noticeable tattoo of a Chinese dragon on her right shin. She sometimes went by the names Mae Magdalene or Sparrow. The months following Maggie's last sighting passed with a troubling silence. Her family was accustomed to her struggling with addiction and sometimes losing contact for periods, but this extended absence felt different and deeply concerning. It wasn’t until March 22, 2023, about nine months after she was last seen, that she was officially reported missing to the Edmonton Police Service. This significant delay created substantial challenges for the investigation. By the time authorities were notified, Maggie’s apartment had been emptied due to unpaid rent, and all her belongings were gone, erasing a potential source of crucial clues. This left investigators with significant gaps in the timeline of her disappearance. The investigation into what happened to Maggie has pieced together some of her last known activities while leaving many questions unanswered. Police discovered that one of her final actions was a phone call made around 5:00 a.m. to her boyfriend, Stephen Kashman. Kashman was incarcerated at the time, and his phone was in the possession of the police. Based on the duration of the call, investigators believe Maggie left a voicemail, the contents of which remain a mystery. Tragically, Stephen Kashman passed away before police had the opportunity to speak with him about the message. Authorities are now hopeful that he may have shared information about the voicemail with someone who might yet come forward. Investigators are also trying to understand why Maggie visited an acquaintance in the Capilano area just days before she disappeared, how she got there, and what became of a black 2007 Mazda 6S she may have had access to.
