On July 18, 2016, he set out on one such excursion, heading to a familiar camp approximately 14 kilometers west of Hanson Lake Road. The last time anyone heard from him was on July 22, 2016. When days turned into a week with no word, his family grew deeply concerned and reported him missing on July 25th. At the time of his disappearance, Tony was described as being five feet eleven inches tall with a medium build, short grey hair, and brown eyes. He was believed to be wearing black pants, a dark blue shirt, and was carrying a red basket for his harvest. The news of Tony's disappearance launched an extensive search effort in the rugged terrain surrounding Big Sandy Lake, an area known for its dense forest and very limited cellular phone coverage. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) from both the La Ronge and Nipawin detachments immediately began ground searches. They were soon joined by dedicated Search and Rescue teams and the Civil Air Search and Rescue Association (CASARA), which conducted aerial searches of the vast wilderness in the hopes of spotting any sign of the missing man. RCMP police dogs were also utilized in the effort to track his whereabouts. Despite these thorough and multi-faceted searches, no trace of Tony Olekas or his belongings was found. Authorities urged caution to any members of the public who might consider joining the search, emphasizing the remoteness and challenging nature of the area. As the weeks turned into months, the search for Tony Olekas transitioned into a long-term missing person investigation. The RCMP made public appeals for any information that could lead to his whereabouts, specifically reaching out to people who might have cabins in the area to report any unusual activity they may have noticed. With the arrival of hunting season, a renewed hope emerged that hunters familiar with the remote landscape might come across a clue that had been previously missed.
