On a rough evening in October 1987, 58-year-old Phillip Richard Orvis set out from Matheson Island, Manitoba, in his boat. His destination was his fishing camp located at Black Bear Island, a familiar trip for the experienced outdoorsman. The waters of the lake were treacherous and choppy on this particular day, creating hazardous conditions for a small vessel. Compounding the danger, Phillip was not a swimmer and was known to never wear a life jacket. Around 9:00 p.m., he embarked on his journey, heading out onto the turbulent lake alone. That evening would be the last time he was ever seen. The following day, concern grew when Phillip had not reached his destination. A discovery was made that confirmed the worst fears of those who knew him. His boat was found adrift, having drifted against the mainland about half a mile southeast of the dock from where he had departed. The boat itself was swamped and filled with water, a grim testament to the power of the waves from the previous night. The sight of the empty, water-filled vessel initiated an immediate and extensive search for Phillip, as family and authorities hoped to find him alive, perhaps stranded on a shore. Authorities launched comprehensive search operations by land, air, and water in the vast area surrounding his last known location. The lake was dragged in an effort to locate him, but despite these exhaustive efforts, Phillip Richard Orvis was never found. No signs of his whereabouts were ever discovered. Investigators concluded that foul play was not a factor in his disappearance. It is believed that he drowned in the stormy waters of the lake that night. Though his body was never recovered, Phillip was officially declared deceased in 1995. The case remains a sorrowful chapter in the history of the region, a story of a man who ventured into the unforgiving nature he knew well, only to be claimed by its immense and unpredictable power.
