On a spring day in Brantford, Ontario, on March 23, 1963, three-year-old James "Jimmy" Paige was happily riding his bike. He was with his five-year-old brother, Michael, and another friend, circling the block on Spring Street as they often did. The children went around their usual route a couple of times, but then, in a moment that would change their family forever, Michael turned around to find that his little brother was gone. Michael searched for Jimmy, going back and forth, before running home to tell their mother he couldn't find him. What began as a normal morning of childhood play quickly turned into a frantic search and a mystery that would span decades. Immediately following Jimmy's disappearance, the community rallied together in a massive search effort. Over 200 people scoured the neighborhood and combed the banks of the nearby Grand River for five miles, while local organizations provided support to the search parties. The prevailing police theory at the time was that Jimmy had wandered to the Grand River, located about three or four blocks from his home, and drowned in the icy water. This theory was largely based on the statement of another young child who was found playing with Jimmy's toy tractor. When questioned by police, the boy led them to the riverbank and said that Jimmy "went underneath". However, the reliability of a witness of such a young age has been questioned. Despite the extensive searches, no trace of Jimmy was ever found. The search was eventually suspended due to rising water levels in the river. Many, including his older brother Michael, have long doubted the drowning theory, questioning how a three-year-old could have navigated several blocks on his own, especially since he didn't know how to cross the street. It has also been noted by community members and police that the Grand River typically reveals those it has claimed, making the absence of any discovery unusual. Decades later, the case of Jimmy Paige remains an unsolved disappearance, a painful void for his family who are left to wonder what happened to the little boy who vanished while riding his bike on that spring day.
