In the late spring of 1967, a day of fishing turned into a tragedy that would leave a family forever changed. On the morning of May 28th, 34-year-old John Pawloski was enjoying time by the water in the area of Pointe du Bois, Manitoba. He was accompanied by his common-law wife and a 9-year-old boy. The tranquil scene was shattered in an instant when John's fishing rod began to slip into the fast-moving water. As he lunged for it, he lost his footing and fell into the turbulent river. In a desperate attempt to save him, his wife tried to reach for him but also slipped on the treacherous rocks and was pulled into the current. The young boy who was with them ran to find help, and when he looked back, the couple was no longer visible. A search was launched, and tragically, the body of John's wife was recovered a short distance down the river soon after the incident. Despite extensive searches by air, land, and water, John was never found. John Pawloski was a man in the prime of his life, described as being 5'10" and weighing 176 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes. A noticeable scar marked the left side of his forehead. On the day he vanished, he was wearing a white shirt and light-colored pants. The official investigation into his disappearance concluded with the presumption that he had drowned in the swift currents of the river that day. The case remains a somber reminder of how quickly a peaceful day can turn to one of immense loss, leaving behind unanswered questions and a family to grieve a man who was never brought home. The overview of the case is one of a sudden and tragic accident, where a recreational outing ended in the presumed drowning of Ernest John Pawloski, whose body was never recovered despite the recovery of his companion.
