In the late summer of 1991, a sense of unease settled over the community of Manitoulin Island, Ontario, with the disappearance of 25-year-old Michael Dennis Recollet. Michael, an Indigenous male, was last seen on August 20th of that year at the Okeechobee Lodge Dock in Fraser Bay. On that day, he embarked on a journey by boat, heading in a westerly direction toward Birch Island. At the time he went missing, Michael was described as having a stocky build, standing at 5'10" and weighing approximately 198 pounds, with brown eyes and wavy brown or black hair. His departure from the dock marked the last confirmed sighting of him, leaving his family and friends in a state of anxious uncertainty. The initial hope for Michael's safe return began to fade when his 16-foot cedar strip boat and its 25HP Mariner motor were discovered. The vessel was found near Mary's Point on Little La Cloche Island, but there was no sign of Michael. This discovery intensified the concern for his well-being and prompted search efforts in the surrounding waters and islands. The vast and rugged landscape of the area presented significant challenges to those looking for him. Despite the efforts of law enforcement and community members, no trace of Michael was found, deepening the mystery surrounding his disappearance. Decades have passed since Michael Dennis Recollet was last seen, yet his case remains an open wound for his loved ones and community. The passage of time has not diminished the hope for answers or the pain of not knowing what happened to him on that August day. The Ontario Provincial Police continue to list him as a missing person, and his family still waits for any information that might bring them closure. His disappearance is a somber reminder of the many unresolved missing Indigenous persons cases in the region and serves as an enduring mystery that has left a lasting impact on all who knew him. The fundamental questions of where he went and what fate he met after leaving the dock remain unanswered.
