On April 27, 1967, a 10-year-old girl named Marianne Schuett was walking the short 400 yards from Kilbride Public School to her home in the small community of Kilbride, near Burlington, Ontario, but she never arrived. It was approximately 4:00 p.m. when Marianne, who had brown, ear-length hair with bangs and greenish-blue eyes, was last seen. She was wearing a red and beige reversible jacket, a blue sweater, a green plaid skirt, and blue sneaker-style shoes. Witnesses reported seeing her near the school's driveway speaking to an unknown man in what was described as a small, dark blue or black European-style Renault station wagon with chrome across the back. One witness even saw a girl matching Marianne's description get into the vehicle. It is believed she was abducted by this man. The disappearance of Marianne Schuett sparked one of the largest searches in Ontario's history, involving an estimated 18,000 people. Despite extensive land and air searches, the only significant piece of physical evidence recovered was one of her blue running shoes, found two days later in the Speyside area, about 14 kilometers away. A composite sketch was created of the suspect, described as a man in his 40s with a thin face, glasses, and wearing a fedora. Another crucial witness came forward, reporting they had seen a nervous-looking man, who matched the suspect's description, cleaning out a dark blue Renault station wagon at a picnic area near Dundas two days after Marianne went missing. This witness had even written down the car's license plate number, but for reasons that remain unclear, this lead was not immediately followed up by investigators at the time. Years later, when the case was re-examined, investigators finally traced the license plate number. It belonged to a man with a history of pedophilia who had lived in Burlington when Marianne disappeared. This individual had been jailed in 1972 for the attempted abduction of another young girl and was also a suspect in the sexual assaults of two other children in the 1970s. Shortly after being confronted by police in 1990 regarding these assaults and Marianne's disappearance, the man took his own life. Over the decades, numerous searches have been conducted, including the excavation of a well in 2011 based on a tip, which only uncovered animal bones. The case has remained in the public eye through the efforts of retired police officers and community members, who have organized renewed search efforts and established a memorial bench in her honor. The abduction of Marianne Schuett shattered the sense of security in her small town and remains an unsolved case that has haunted her family and the community for over half a century.
