He was last seen in the Huntsville area sometime between January and March of 1998, a man with grey, short hair, blue eyes, and a thin build. The investigation into Semple's disappearance soon uncovered a pattern of missing elderly residents connected to the same retirement homes. Alongside John Semple, Joan Lawrence, Ralph Bernard Grant, and John Leroy Crofts also went missing between 1997 and 1999. The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) initially treated these as individual missing persons cases but later began to suspect foul play. As the years passed with no sign of Semple or the other missing seniors, the investigations were eventually classified as homicides. The owners of the properties have since changed, and the current owners have no connection to these historical and troubling events. Despite extensive searches of the properties formerly owned by the family who ran the homes, and surrounding areas, the remains of John James Semple and the other three individuals have never been found. The OPP has made public appeals for information over the years, hoping to bring a resolution to the families who have been left with unanswered questions for over two decades. The cases have been the subject of media attention, including a CBC podcast, as investigators continue to seek the crucial tip that could solve this long-standing mystery.
