In the late summer of 1972, a fishing trip to the remote and serene MacMillan Lake in Manitoba turned into a lasting mystery. On the weekend of August 18th, Dennis Arthur Simpson and a friend embarked on what should have been a peaceful angling excursion. The two men were last seen on Sunday, August 20, 1972, by another individual who was on the shore. They exchanged a few words, with Simpson and his friend indicating they were going to make one final pass on the lake before packing up their camp to head home. As the days passed with no word from the fishermen, concern began to mount among their family and friends. By August 22nd, with the men overdue, authorities were alerted, and a formal investigation into their disappearance was launched. The initial search of their campsite revealed it was still set up, suggesting an abrupt and unplanned departure. The focus of the search quickly shifted to the vast and unforgiving waters of MacMillan Lake, as investigators considered the challenging weather conditions at the time of their last sighting. The investigation uncovered that the weather had turned, and the lake was experiencing rough waters around the time the men were last seen. This information, combined with the fact that they were in a relatively small canoe, led to the prevailing theory that their watercraft may have capsized in the turbulent conditions. An extensive and exhaustive search operation was conducted, involving resources on land, in the water, and from the air. Despite these significant efforts, the search teams were only able to locate various items that were identified as belonging to the two missing men. The overview of this case is that Dennis Arthur Simpson and his friend are believed to have met with a tragic accident on the lake, but without the recovery of either man, the exact circumstances of what happened on that August day remain officially unknown, leaving a painful void for their families.
