In the summer of 1983, a family in Oakville, Ontario, was grappling with a mother's serious illness while also facing the disappearance of their teenage daughter. Sixteen-year-old Jannisina Stonehouse, known affectionately as "Sina" to her family and "Jan" to her friends, was last seen on August 8, 1983. It is believed she left her home because she was pregnant. Jannisina had a history of running away, but this time felt different. Her mother was gravely ill in the hospital and passed away a short time after she vanished. When Jannisina failed to return for her mother's funeral, her concerned father officially reported her as a missing person. Investigators soon discovered a compelling link between Jannisina's case and that of another missing teenager from the same town. Six months prior, on February 14, 1983, Jannisina's 16-year-old friend, Darlene Tucker, had also disappeared. The circumstances were strikingly similar; Darlene, a student at General Wolfe High School, left her home on Lakeshore Road West after an argument with her mother upon discovering that she, too, was pregnant. Darlene initially stayed with a boyfriend in Oakville for a few weeks but left after another disagreement. It wasn't her own family, but her boyfriend's father who eventually reported her missing to the Halton Regional Police. In the months that followed, Darlene made a few collect calls to her mother from a payphone in Huntsville, Ontario, an area where her family owned a vacation trailer. Over the years, a few potential sightings gave investigators and the girls' families glimmers of hope. Darlene was reportedly seen working as a waitress in Toronto in 1985. The most significant lead came in 1987, when there was a confirmed sighting of both Jannisina and Darlene together in the Haliburton or Huntsville area. This would be the last time either of the young women was definitively seen. Concern for their welfare grew when Darlene never claimed a trust fund that became available to her when she turned 18. The overview of this case is a sad tale of two friends, both 16 and pregnant, who vanished from their hometown within months of each other. While it's believed they initially left voluntarily, the complete absence of contact for decades has left a void of unanswered questions. With Jannisina's parents now deceased and no siblings to carry on the search, the enduring mystery of what happened to the two girls remains, leaving behind a legacy of unresolved loss.
